  • Yes. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and can use the designatory letters ‘MBACP’ after my name. My registration number is 391931.

In the United Kingdom Psychotherapist and Counsellor are not protected titles. This means our government does not regulate the profession, and as a result, anyone can call themselves a counsellor with minimal training. This is why top training schools in the field, such as Birkbeck College, University of London, Tavistock, and the Northern School, have designed rigorous trainings leading to registration status with accrediting bodies such as BACP. The BACP has designed an ethical framework and guidelines for the safe practice of counselling and psychotherapy, which all members must follow.

  • Confidentiality is an important part of a therapeutic relationship, and means that the content of your therapy sessions (e.g. what is discussed and/or any artworks produced), will be kept in the strictest confidence. However, to ensure that the practice of therapy is safe, ethical and robust, members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) are required to discuss their case work in regular clinical supervision with a senior colleague. If your case is ever discussed in my supervision appointment, your name and all identifying information will be anonymised. Brief notes written after sessions will also not contain identifying information and will be securely stored.

In some circumstances, there are legal exceptions to confidentiality, such as a disclosure of (or suspected) child or vulnerable adult abuse or neglect, if the victim is still at risk. Any breach of confidentiality would ideally take place with your prior consent and knowledge.

  • As part of my practice, I sometimes offer parent-work, in addition or instead of, one-to-one counselling and psychotherapy for a child or young person. Parent-work may be recommended after an initial assessment, and only if it would be beneficial. Although similar, parent work is not therapy. Instead, it is a thinking-space between the therapist and parent/s with a central focus on the parent-child relationship. Parent-work may be helpful for example, where a child is not ready to engage in therapy, but the parent/s are struggling with the issues affecting the child and support would benefit the parent-child relationship.

Sometimes a joined up approach between a therapist and parent is beneficial and compliments the individual therapy of a child. However equally, and depending on the individual, it can be unhelpful. In this instance, parent-work would not be recommended.

  • Every individual is facing different challenges. Length often depends on how complex the issue or issues you are needing to bring to therapy are. Our initial appointment will help to jointly determine these aspects, and assess which type of structure is most suitable for your needs.
